Emily's Closet offers free prom dresses to Baldwin County students

BAY MINETTE, Alabama -- For many girls, prom season is an exciting time filled with shopping for the perfect dress, scheduling hair appointments and picking out shoes and accessories. But that’s not always the case as many families simply cannot afford the high costs associated with celebrating the milestone.

That’s where Emily’s Closet steps in — offering high school girls the chance to select a free prom dress to wear for the occasion. Sponsored by the Heritage Junior Women’s Club, this year’s boutique will be held 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at North Baldwin Chamber of Commerce in Bay Minette.

The boutique is open to all students in Baldwin County’s public and private high schools. Club members will serve as personal shoppers to assist the girls at the boutique and refreshments will be served, organizers said.

The project began in 2005 in memory of Emily Rose Parker, a Bay Minette teen who was killed in an automobile accident in 2003 — just before the start of her senior year at Baldwin County High School. Since then, Emily’s Closet has given away more than 500 dresses to area girls.
